Muscle wasting, also known as muscle atrophy, is the loss of muscle mass and strength. Several factors, including disease, lack of use, injury, extended immobilization, malnutrition, neurogenic conditions, and aging can cause it.

ICU Related Conditions

Mechanical ventilation (MV) is a life-saving intervention, however:

  • Patients can lose up to 30% of muscle mass in a week.
  • Prolonged MV leads to a variety of myopathies, which increase ICU stays for millions of patients per year, costing health systems tens of billions1 and leading to higher mortality and morbidity rates.
  • MV usage is also associated with other iatrogenic complications.2
