Use of EVs Derived from BM-MSCs

Leksum’s novel discovery for the treatment of muscle myopathy that underpins the Muscle Regeneration Platform was supported by more than $30 million of funding primarily in the form of grants from major funding agencies including the European Commission and the National Institutes of Health.

Bone marrow-derived mesenchymal stromal cells (BM-MSCs) promote activation of endogenous repair pathways and reprogramming of immune cells, leading to modulation of inflammatory and remodeling processes.1

BM-MSCs generate biologically active extracellular vesicles (EVs).

Discovery: The systemic administration of multiple doses of EVs derived from BM-MSCs offers a novel approach to combatting the lung injury associated with MV 2.

Usage of EVs is preferred to that of stem cells for several reasons including safety, efficacy, lower cost, and they are easier to store3.

1/ The first MSC therapy was approved by the U.S. FDA in December 2024 (see here), thus providing precedence for Leksum’s novel therapy of employing EVs derived from BM-MSCs.
